Throttle Pulley: Getting It Out Of The Way

1990 XJ-S and 1991 XJ-S Classic Collection Coupes (US Spec, 5.3L V12)

Tools/Parts:

7/16” Socket/Wrench

The Throttle Pulley (also known as the “turntable” and “bell-crank”) is in the rear-center of the “Vee”.  If you turn it clockwise by hand while the engine is running, the engine will rev.

To move the Pulley out of the way, pop off the Throttle Rods (going from the Pulley to the Throttle Linkage at the rear of the Intake Manifolds), you can do this by hand.  Remove the four 7/16” nuts holding the Pulley to the Throttle Pedestal and don’t drop the washers (use a small socket – it’ll fit in there).  Unplug the two wires from the Throttle “Kick Down” switch and the two from the Throttle Pulley EFI Micro-switch (for Closed/Open Loop Mode of the EFI).  You can then lift the Pulley and switches as one assembly and move it forward out of the way (the top Ignition Coil/Bracket can just hang there).

If you want to move it further out of the way, unplug the Throttle Potentiometer (a.ka. “TPS”) – it’s the white connector to the right of the word “Potentiometer” in the picture below.  By the way, now is a good time to check that Potentiometer
